WEATHER

North America is riddled with extreme changes to temperatures with the change of the seasons. Canada in particular, with variations from minus -51.2°C in Yellowknife in winter to plus +43.9°C in Regina in summer, and massive rainfall up to 1,589 mm in Vancouver. In the winter, when temperatures drop far below zero, freezing surfaces for extended periods of time and expanding any moisture in the form of ice. This results in damage to buildings and especially roads, as potholes reveal themselves every spring. These are often dangerous to drivers and always result in delayed traffic from construction and major costs to municipalities and hence to everyone. Any cracks in buildings that fill with water in the fall, freeze in the winter and accelerating the structural degeneration process in the spring. Other road infrastructure elements made from concrete like bridges and tunnels, culverts, sidewalks etc. are vulnerable too. Residential, industrial and office buildings that have a concrete foundation and main structure could experience the same type of problems.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Canada is eighth in the world by road length (kilometers). Canada builds and repairs about 800-1000 kilometers of road surface annually. Only over half of the highways (59.3%), local roads (51.6%), and arterial roads (51.5%) in Canada were deemed to be in very good or good physical condition. Approximately 20% of each type of road was in poor or very poor condition.

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

The composite cement industry in Canada produces a variety of cement products that are used for making concrete, mortar, and stucco. Industry demand and performance are linked to the level of activity in the residential and commercial construction markets. These industries have been on a meteoric ascent in for the past two decades in Canada.

Road Roller

OUR ADDITIVE

The developed polymer Composite Nano-Cement additive contributes to the strength of the products manufactured by mixing the additive into the process. It also improves the glue-like qualities of the cement (ductility) thanks to its high surface area to mass ratio. This helps the products manufactured by incorporating the additive withstand more trying weather and moisture conditions. It is very important to improve the quality of the concrete and asphalt mixtures to extend the service of the new and repaired roads.

CNC composite is added to the concrete at the time of batching together with standard Portland cement during the production cycle. Other potential CNC applications:

SCIENCE

HOW DOES IT WORK?

TECHNOLOGY

Our additive helps acts as a glue by improving the adhesion of particles cement products. The combination of ultra-small nano-cement particles and composite polymer binders ensures full consolidation of cement with a strong and uniform structure that prevents water infiltration and weather damage.

The CNC is composed of tiny grains below 100 nanometers. The small particle size has a higher surface area, which improves binding between particles and increases strength and durability.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Our polymer composite additive improves hardness and mobile ductility which helps balance variable climatic temperature conditions. The second main component of this invention is a polymer and adhesive base; and Sodium naphthalene sulfonate is used as a superplasticizer base. This contributes to the strength and resilience of the most widely used type of cement across the wrorld, Portland cement. Portland cement is based on silicates (alite and whiteite), it is a hydraulic binder obtained by co-grinding cement clinker, gypsum and additives, in which calcium silicates predominate (70-80 %).

The picture below shows the percentage of CNC components in the final product: CNC concrete.

Superplasticizers and polymer-adhesives parts are prepared separately and then mixed to a homogeneous mass in special ball mills into nanoshells - capsules sized 20 - 100 nm.

  1. nano Baso 4 (C10H7NaO3S) - sodium naphthalene sulfonate is used as a superplasticizer base

  2. antimony oxide (Sb2O3) - anti-fire supplement

  3. boron nitride - thermal conductivity supplement

  4. solvent (thinner) - additive for thinning and better mixing

  5. texanol (C12H24O3) - plasticizers (softener)

  6. chalk - anti-fermentation adhesive

The amount of additive needed to create the improved cement is $335 on average for every kilometer of road constructed. Considering that the cost of cement per one kilometer of road is upwards of $7,000,000, the additive is ф minor fraction of the overall cost (0.005%).

APPLICATION

Paving concrete will reach 4000 psi compressive strength at 28 days. But an even more important characteristic of quality concrete is durability. It will withstand over time, through all kinds of traffic, wet and dry weather, and freeze cycles.  The developed polymer composite nano-cement additive improves the durability of highways by a factor of 1.5 to 2.

The CNC additive can be used to reduce the cost of building with concrete or to ensure certain required properties or quality of the cured concrete. If problems arise with the concrete during the construction process, additives can be used as an emergency measure to try and prevent faults. An additional feature of CNC additive is it superplasticizer that reduces required water content by 12-30% to make a highly fluid but workable form of concrete known as flowing concrete.

SPECIFICATIONS

Concrete with CNC additive is produced by mixing cement, sand, gravel, water and nano-additives. Cement and water are the main bonding components in concrete production.

PRODUCTION
APPLICATION

CNC additive is manufactured using standard industrial equipment and results in cement that is stronger and more weather resistant. Our platform provides the following advantages:

  • The combination of ultra-small nano-cement particles and composite polymer binders ensures full consolidation of cement with a strong and uniform structure that prevents water infiltration and weather damage.

  • Small particle size has a higher surface area, which improves binding between particles and increases strength and durability.

  • The new composition is highly weather-resistant and can withstand water, ice, and salt and provide longer durability on Canadian roads.

  • The composition makes the product inexpensive, yet the process doesn't require any changes to the technology of concrete production.

Using CNC for the standard coating of asphalt increases the road life cycle from the standard 15-25 years to 40-60 years. The additive costs only 0.09% of the price of road works per kilometer which is estimated to be more than $7M. This makes CNC a highly attractive and cost-effective solution for the major benefit of improvement of the lifetime of the final product.
